Extend Selection Mode is activated when pointing in a reference, and either the F8 Extend Selection shortcut is pressed or the : (colon) character is pressed after pointing to a range..  While in Extend Selection Mode, pressing keys that move the active cell will change the address of the second reference n the range, extending or shrinking the referenced range, diagonally opposite the active cell..  [click the link to see a screenshot of the Extend Selection Mode flag]

The screenshot below shows the Extend Selection Mode status flag, which will appear after the Macro Recorder button, if it is displayed, otherwise to the right of the Num-Lock flag. at the left-hand edge of the Status Bar at the bottom of the document window.
